Popular peer-to-peer file-sharing website LimeWire on Wednesday dismisses allegations of inadvertent data leaks to its network during a hearing at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, saying that “show” at the agency was designed and orchestrated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In an interview, Lime Group Chairman Mark Gordon said that he was not surprised when the committee has turned its sights to peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, including LimeWire, saying that alleged security threat posed during hearing was nothing but a “freak show” run by recording companies that are really more concerned about copyright infringements being done in P2P sites.
Gordon said that the “security threat” hearing was a cover up on the real issue, which is the music industries’ continuing demolition of P2P networks.
The official, citing testimonies of Progress and Freedom Foundation’s Thomas Sydnor, said that Oversight Committee’s report was biased and favored greatly the RIAA.
“The testimony of Sydnor was very tricky and deceptive once you parsed it. His report presented before the committee is simply bias since his company is backed by the RIAA, which is calling for the abolition of P2P networks such as LimeWire,” Gordon said.
During the hearing, Gordon was blasted by lawmakers for the alleged security failure in LimeWire and other related websites.
It will be recalled that the committee has opened a probe on the matter after several highly-sensitive documents including the location of the safe house of former US first lady Laura Bush was leaked in to the network.
Lawmakers, citing the report by Sydnor and other witness, said that the peer-to-peer network was “extremely susceptible” to accidental file sharing.
But Gordon brushed off the allegation, pointing the attack to music labels.
He added that Sydnor has “cleverly” manipulated the facts to produce a highly misleading statement or report but when some parse it would come up to a conclusion that it is untrue.
