The House bill seeking for the complete ban of peer-to-peer networks on government has gained momentum after security firm Tiversa Inc. presented before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee over 200 sensitive military documents that were being shared via P2P technology.
It will be recalled that House committee has asked the security firm to search and acquire data from the government that were being circulated in P2P networks.
These data will be used as evidence to accusations that file-sharing websites can access and disseminate sensitive information that can be used against the government.
Following the order from the House, Tiversa was able to gather some 200 more documents including personal information about the US troops that were based overseas.
Also included in the gathered documents were sensitive military photos, projects, contracts and documents that directly violated International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) policies.
Tiversa executives cited that in one acquired document, all the personal data of the entire Third Special Forces Group in Fort Bragg, Georgia were posted. The document also includes the names, ages, and children of the soldiers.
Also earlier, Tiversa claimed that it has found some documents regarding the secret location of a presidential safe house, which includes that motorcade routes provided to President Barack Obama and his convoy during times of crisis.
Another sensitive document disclosed in the P2P networks was top secret photos and information about the Marine One, the official helicopter used by US presidents. This information was traced to a location pointing to Iranian system.
Tiversa said that it might have been accidentally shared or leaked to the Iranian system using P2P networks.
They added that these types of info are very sensitive to the point that it can cause national security threat.
Due to this, the House has decided to push forward with the bill banning P2P file-sharing websites to the government network to prevent further leaks of vital information.
