President Barack Obama has appointed a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC). What will be his stance for net neutrality especially on issues of bittorrent sites?
President Barack Obama has recently appointed Julius Genachowski as the new chairman for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which is an independent government agency that overlooks broadband technology and online media.
In a statement, Obama said he believe that Genachowski, a lawyer and Internet executive, has enough experience to manage the online media.
“I believe that with his two decades of experience in working in technology and communications both in the private and public sector, he can be a good leader for the communication agency”, the President added.
Few weeks ago, there has already been speculation that Genachowski will be appointed as the new FCC chairman since he played an important role for Obama’s campaign when the latter was still running for presidency.
When asked for comments, some analysts predicted that Genachowski will implement more Net neutrality policies which may not appear popular for most telecommunication companies.
One of the most controversial rulings of FCC
Last year, FCC released a ruling which stated that Internet service provider (ISP) Comcast’s throttling activity against bittorrent protocol is illegal and should be stopped. This decision has been well-received by supporters of Net neutrality who believe that Internet is the only media that enjoys real freedom.
Meanwhile, ISP Cox has also been accused of using “throttling” software which affects the speed of torrent files.
Both ISP received wide criticism from file-sharers who believe that these companies are violating the principle of Net neutrality.
