Internet giant Google recently introduced its newest open platform which can support various Internet measurement tools including one that will allow users to see if their Internet service providers (ISPs) are blocking or “throttling” the BitTorrent sites.
While the introduction of the Measurement Lab (M-Lab) may not be a good news for some industries (probably the Internet providers and record labels since the program will allow people to check if the Bittorrent protocol is blocked from their computers), this platform will offer people with advanced network research while providing them with tools to check their broadband connections.
These are the features and capabilities of M-Lab: it will allow people to measure the speed of their Internet connection; test if their ISPs are blocking or “throttling” applications particularly Bittorrent; and run diagnostic tests.
With this new platform, Google aims to provide users with tools that can help them to see common problems of their computer in terms of broadband connection, application that can slow down the performance of the hardware, and the computer unit itself.
This is how M-Lab works: after diagnosing the computer, the platform will send data to the users regarding the cause of the problem.
According to Google, it will set up 36 servers in 12 locations all over Europe and US to further improve the features of M-Lab, adding that it is welcoming other institutions which can contribute to the development of the platform.
Google also said there are already three tools available for users to allow them to diagnose any problems of their computers and broadband connection.
