Demigod Encounters Massive Piracy

PC game industry previously said it is losing millions of revenue due to online piracy which is has become worse since the arrival of bittorrent protocol which allows Internet users to download game applications faster.  In 2001, Bram Cohen designed and released the controversial program which has been used by several file-sharing websites to improve its Internet traffic.

But unlike record industry which has filed lawsuits against illegal file-sharers and websites which use bittorrent program, a chief executive from a computer game maker said that online piracy should be ignored as this problem may be hard if not impossible to solve.

In a statement, Stardock chief executive Brad Wardell said that fans will buy PC games in legal sites if they will appreciate it.

While Wardell’s stance have promoted the software company’s image as a supporter of online freedom, some experts believe that ignoring pirates may have negative ramifications especially when it affects legitimate clients.

In case of Stardock, its popular PC game Demigod has become a favorite content of pirates that it has been reported that the company’s network system broke down due to a large number of users, majority were believed to be illegal online players.

According to earlier report, the chief executive said their network can support tens of thousand of users who play Demigod at any given time.  But with the popularity of this PC game, it has been estimated that nearly 120,000 people are going online to play this at any time—a number which has caused the system to collapse due to heavy Internet traffic.

Meanwhile, the software firm has estimated that with this large number of users, only 18,000 players are legitimate or those who paid to play the popular video game.
